How can the Bible have no mistakes?
The Bible is God’s word that he left to communicate with us, and God is perfect. Scripture itself proclaims its own perfection, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; testimony the of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;” (Psalm 19:7 ESV) and “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever” (Psalm 119:160 ESV). Scripture goes on to state that this message is not to be added to or taken away from, “And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you” (Deuteronomy 4:1-2 ESV). If these words are true, then it proclaims the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. The question in deciding the Bible’s inerrancy is whether a person believes what scriptures says about itself, and faith that the author is God.
The scriptures of the Old Testament were cannon during Jesus’ time, and these were the scriptures Jesus referred to in his teachings. The Old testament was fulfilled with Jesus and this was recorded in the New Testament. These scriptures were written based on the writings of the Old Testament, because they would not add to the words God commanded. Faith in the God of the Bible that tells us that His word is perfect, truth, and endures forever.
When I have discussed this topic with unbelievers, I have asked them to test the Bible. If they are truly seeking answers, God is calling them to repentance, and with the help of the Holy Spirit they will come to a saving faith and find the truth.
Paul writes, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). This topic all comes down to this: The Bible is without error because God is the author.
