The Bread of Life

Updated: Apr 26

Today is Day 4 of counting the Omer and at sunset we will begin Day 5.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread is a time when leaven is removed from the house. Sometimes I wonder how can a feast be called a feast when removing types of food, most notably BREAD! We will be looking forward to the fresh challah bread the Friday night after this feast is over!

During this feast the leaven is out of the house as a reminder that Israel had to leave Egypt in a hurry. All of those following God left after the Passover sacrifice when the final plague of the firstborn of each family without blood on their doorposts died. Egypt wailed. Life in bondage was over, they were to leave Egypt behind and follow God's ways.

In reflecting over this time I can't help but think about leaven representing sin. Before Passover, while getting the leaven out of our houses, we are also to be thinking about any sin in our lives that needs forgiveness. We remember this time thinking about where we were before we decided to follow God. Passover begins this time with remembering Christ's sacrifice. Along with the sacrifice we eat bitter herbs to remember our own bondage to sin we eat matzah to remember that now we have put the sin behind us and follow something new (Exodus 12:8). Sometimes I find myself craving a sandwich or a burger during this Passover time and I am reminded symbolically how strong sin's temptation can pull on me.

After the seventh day of Unleavened Bread we bring the yeast back. The idea is now that we have gotten rid of the old way of life with the leaven and we are now on to new way of life. Christ rises from the dead on First Fruits, the day after the Sabbath, and God has conquered death.

We have been counting the omer for a few days since the Feast of Weeks started on First Fruits (counting starts after the wave offering) and lasts until Pentecost (note, this is why I did a YouTube video on the timeline of these spring feasts because of how confusing this can seem). The Holy Spirit is given at Pentecost/Shavuot, 7 weeks and a day later (Leviticus 23: 15-16), for those who have decided to follow the Way of Christ and put their faith in him.

Looking forward to Shavuot!

May God lead you as you study His Word!
