Why is Sin Fun?

Sometimes it seems that there is no way to avoid the lure of fun.

Growing up in church there was an idea that all the fun things were for non Christians. Church activities were boring.

First, if there isn't a relationship with God, church would be boring. In fact, a nonbeliever can't see what a believer does.

There is a wrong mindset.

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).

The goal of the sinful man is to worship self and escape responsibility. This is what gets labeled as "fun." The things of God are "folly" because their focus is on worldly things and feeding sinful lusts. Making an idol of self supports feeding the sinful desires and seems appropriate. This trying to escape responsibility for sinful actions and makes the rebellious man their own god.

This is in contrast to what is found in Romans 6:6-7, "We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin." This is about changing to the right mindset. The "fun" of sin is being a slave to sin and not realizing that it is a broken humanity that doesn't want the freedom Christ offers.

Galatians 2:20 states, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

When tempted, remember what is important and who you are as a new creation. Do you really want "fun" to put a barrier between you and God? Maybe you think that there is no way you can avoid the lure of the type of fun you want to have. I would tell you that you are right, temptation plays on the desire that is within you and you can't avoid it . . . on your own.

God tells us this, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." (I Corinthians 10:13). With God's help there is no temptation that you can't escape or endure, but you must go to God. Many times this is the process of maturing in Christ and getting rid of the old self.

In this we must go to God and not participate in sin. "You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons" (I Corinthians 10:21).

Make a choice of being a slave to sin or being set free in Christ.
